Lauren never had a chance. Growing up was a war zone. When her parents were finally deemed unfit, sadly- she found little relief or support in the years to follow. As she grew up in violence, she was a prime target for drug dealers and predatory pedophiles in Oxford. Though she was abused on every level, child services would ignore or deny the sexual abuse in her charts as they were desperate to place her as she got older in a "forever home." Though cruel, this did end up the right choice, or her Mum never would have been found as she did not know how to handle sexual abuse. But before she was placed with her, Lauren had to go through years of temporary placement and sometimes further abuse, torn from her 4 siblings and loving grandparents who were her world.I can relate to Lauren's story (later Lara.) She was preyed on, used, manipulated and she somehow prevailed. The last part of the book, though I won't spoil it- highlighted her extreme bravery as she faced her oppressors so they would hopefully have consequences and she could move on with her life. Her courage was remarkable and I commend her for standing her guard, though she must have feared for her life and those around her.The story exposes the methods of a huge ring of pedophiles operating quietly in Oxford and likely all over the world. It is a harrowing tale, terrifying for a mother like myself to read, as I cringed with her adoptive mother at each page. Lauren put her family through absolute hell, her adoptive mother however, was not to be deterred and did everything in her power to help, but was still helpless to watch her daughter devoured by monsters daily. My heart breaks for Lara. I wish her the very best in her recreating her life and moving forward, hopefully with years of therapy and support. I know as an abused child from the foster care system myself that it never goes away, but it does get easier.
I couldn't believe the hold the gang had on Lara. To be coming and going from a family home.. I just wanted her to go to the police!!Frustrating, but I understand that she was psychologically brain washed and drawn in with drugs and terrified of what the gang would do in retaliation. I really felt for Lara's mother who adopted her. I felt sorry for Lara having such terrible birth parents. The story was almost unbelievable. I believed it because I've read numerous trafficking books before, but the part that was different to other trafficking books was that Lara was coming and going from the family home for years...she wasn't locked in a room with no escape. But I guess she was so brainwashed that she may as well have been physically trapped. She was emotionally/psychologically trapped, blackmailed. The acts of exploitation Lara suffered were sickening and no one deserves to be treated in that way, especially a teenage girl.I googled the names of the offenders after reading the book to see what the monsters looked like. Ugly pedophiles. I realise that domestic violence happens in all cultures but I have to admit, I've seen a pattern in the said religion, raping in packs. Women seem like 2nd class citizens to them. It's either religion, or culture. I know that they aren't all like that but I do read numerous books telling similar stories of abuse. One thing I wonder about is if Lara is still addicted to crack cocaine, whether she went to rehab? I don't think the book mentioned it. A very interesting read, hard to read in places, I just wanted to reach into the book and save her.
This story is told through an unfiltered lens. Lara is amazingly honest. It's so hard to believe (yet not), that no-one figured out what was happening. Especially, since trafficking has been happening in England, for quite some time. Profiles are sadly everywhere, which is how these hideous men, made so much money off these children. Terri and Shane, were simply donors.
Haven’t finished it - if that tells you anything. I wanted details. I didn’t want a complete history of her childhood BEFORE her sex slave days. Half the book is over and she still isn’t a sex slave. I’m not being insensitive to the subject matter, I’m just saying this is what I bought the book for - not the history of child BEFORE she was the Girl For Sale.
This is an incredible story. Your heart breaks seeing the path she is travelling down under the manipulation of the gang and their frighteningly effective brainwashing techniques. I'm excited to see that she survived and hope she's doing well. What she endured is unimaginable. Understanding how trafficking occurs is truly important and I hope many people read this story. Very compelling and I feel bad saying this, but it was a page turner.
Incredible story. I seriously could not put it down. The only way i could get through it was by reminding myself that there's obviously a happy ending, since she's together enough to write a book on what happened. Even more intense is to look up the case online and see the faces of this sickos will did all of this to her!
Lara McDonnell is a brave, courageous and incredibly strong woman to not only relive these horrendous events in court but by sharing her story with the readers. Her writing is well executed. Very emotional read but I feel more educated about human sex trafficking now than before reading this book and I will continue to educate myself and others. Bless you Lara McDonnell.
This is a must read for anyone concerned with human trafficking of children. This personal memoir of one girl's horrific experience as a victim of a gang of pedophiles is revealing, frightening, and sad. Awareness is necessary to combat this kind of evil behavior and reading this book is definitely an eye opener.
